The History Of Lincoln

For many West Lafayette drivers, the Lincoln car logo represents luxury, status, and a willingness to excel. How did the logo first appear, and did it always have the shape and color that Frankfort drivers know today? The Lincoln brand began all the way back in 1917, when Henry M. Leland and his son, Wilfred, created the Lincoln Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. The name "Lincoln" comes from President Abraham Lincoln, who was the first president that Henry ever voted for.

Initially, Lincoln Motor Company created aircraft engines during World War I. However, after the war, there was no need for aircraft engines. Hence, the company shifted toward manufacturing luxury vehicles, with the first-ever Lincoln model being the "L Series."

The Evolution Of The Lincoln Logo

The Lincoln emblem hasn't changed all that much over the decades, but the original emblem sported the word "Lincoln" instead of the symbol that drivers see today. Throughout the 40s, the Lincoln car logo changed to a shield with a four-point emblem inside. Though we're not entirely sure what caused this redesign, we suppose it may have had something to do with Lincoln wanting to emphasize the luxury and royalty aspects of the brand, since some models were built explicitly for the King and Queen of England.

In the 50s, the emblem was redesigned into a four-point star badge. The designer, Robert Thomas, said he wanted to create "a simple, elegant design for an elegant car." Over time, the badge has kept the same design but has evolved into the taller, slimmer emblem that drivers recognize today.
