What Is AWD?

How does standard all-wheel drive (AWD) work? This drivetrain configuration directs torque from the engine to the front and rear axles. By doing this, torque is channeled to all four wheels at the same time.

There are two main AWD types:

  • Full-Time AWD: sends torque to the front and rear axles all of the time
  • Part-Time AWD: monitors road conditions, only sending torque to the front and rear axles when necessary

How Is Lincoln AWD Different From Standard AWD?

Lincoln SUV models use a system known as Lincoln AWD or Intelligent AWD. Intelligent AWD uses sensors that monitor road conditions in West Lafayette as well as the traction your vehicle has on the roads. Based on those conditions, the Intelligent AWD system then determines how much torque and power to direct to the front and rear axles.

Intelligent AWD also senses road conditions and uses that data to instantly determine the right amount of power to redirect to certain axles. Compared to standard AWD, Lincoln AWD is nearly instantaneous as it can do all of this before wheel slip even happens.

How Lincoln AWD Works

We covered it above, but let's go over Lincoln AWD in more detail to show you exactly how it can improve the way you travel around Frankfort:

  • Employes sensors to monitor traction for each wheel in real time
  • Responds to changing road conditions instantly and redistributes torque between wheels when necessary
  • Automatically increases traction to the appropriate axle if one wheel loses traction to prevent slipping
